How Following My Mother Line Changed Everything
For years, I thought I simply had a problem saying no.
I worried about disappointing people. I took responsibility for everyone else’s emotions before considering my own. Like many of my clients, I believed that if everyone around me was happy, then somehow I’d be okay too.
I didn’t realise these weren’t personality traits.
They were survival strategies.
My own journey of healing didn’t begin with my clients—it began with me. As I explored my own family history, I started asking questions I’d never asked before.
Why did boundaries feel so uncomfortable?
Why did guilt appear whenever I put myself first?
Why did I feel responsible for fixing everyone else?
The answers didn’t just lie in my own childhood.
They reached much further back.
The Question That Changed Everything
For a long time, I looked at my experiences through the eyes of the child I had once been. Like many people, I carried hurt and confusion.
Then one day I asked myself a different question.
Not, “Why did my mum do that?”
But…
“What happened to her?”
Everything shifted.
For the first time, I stopped seeing only my mother.
I saw someone’s daughter.
A woman shaped by her own childhood, her own losses, her own fears and the emotional tools she had available at the time.
It didn’t erase my experiences.
But it replaced blame with compassion.
And compassion opened the door to healing.
Why This Matters
Every week I sit with clients who struggle with people pleasing, anxiety, difficult relationships or feeling as though they’re never quite enough.
On the surface, their stories look different.
Underneath, the patterns are often remarkably similar.
They’ve learned that love must be earned.
That saying no is selfish.
That keeping the peace matters more than expressing their needs.
That everyone else comes first.
These beliefs don’t appear from nowhere.
They’re often quietly passed from one generation to the next until someone decides to question them.
Why I Wrote The Mother Solution
As I continued exploring these patterns in both my own life and my work as a therapist, I realised there was a conversation we weren’t having.
Not about blaming mothers.
But about understanding the emotional legacy we inherit.
The Mother Solution.is a book about recognising the beliefs we’ve inherited, understanding where they came from and discovering that we can honour our past without allowing it to define our future.
Because healing isn’t about changing our parents.
It’s about changing what we carry forward.
If This Resonates With You
If you’ve ever struggled to set boundaries…
If you’ve found yourself putting everyone else first…
If you’ve wondered why the same patterns keep appearing in your relationships…
Perhaps it’s time to become curious about your own story.
You don’t have to blame anyone.
You simply have to be willing to ask the questions.
Sometimes, one question is enough to change everything.
